Matthijs van Zessen is fascinated by space and the way we perceive space.
‘By building up my drawings line-by-line, drawing each line, I create a focus in my drawings that provides the viewer to find stillness. I'm interested in the process that happens when you stop assuming what you see and you really start looking. In my drawings I investigate space, the perception of space and perception itself. I believe that to be aware that you see things and to be aware when you see things is a skill that we are losing in todays world in which we are flooded by images.’
